Thor

.

Happy Thors-Day!

Thursday was named after the Norse Viking god, Thor. Thor was the son of Mother Earth. He had a red beard, long flowing red hair and fierce red eyes. He is dressed as a Viking with a winged hat  and holds a mighty hammer that throws out thunder bolts.

. Mother Earth

Whenever the Norse would hear thunder, they would say that it was Thor riding across the sky in his wagon that was pulled by goats.

Thor is known as the god of thunder and lightning, the god of farmers and agriculture, the god of strength, and the protector of both gods and humans against the forces of evil.

Thor's primary weapon was a mighty hammer called a mjolnir. The mjolnir was so heavy that Thor had to wear a  special belt that doubled his strength and iron gloves that worked like a magnet to ensure he had a good grip of the mjolnir. The mjolnir was said to work like a boomerang, that it could return to Thor after he threw it and it would throw out thunderbolts into the sky.

Redheads have often been said to have a hot temper. Well, Thor did have a hot temper, but his anger was used to fight evil... fighting the giants that were the main enemies of the gods. Thor's efforts are much like the story of David and Goliath, except that he used his mighty mjolnir instead of a sling.

There are several stories about Thor, but the one I like is the one when he lost his hammer. Thor sent his friend Loki to go look for it. Loki discovered that Thor's greatest enemy, the giant Thrym, took it and hid it from him.

Thrym told Loki that he had everything he could ever want in life- except Freyja. He said that he did not plan to give the hammer to anyone except the person who would bring Freyja to him to be his bride.

When Thor and Loki tried to get Freyja to come to the Land of the Giants with them, Freyja was furious. She became so enraged that her necklace came apart. Freyja refused to go to the Land of the Giants, so Loki came up with another plan.

Loki tried to convince Thor to pretend he was Freyja by wearing her necklace and dressing up as a bride. Thor didn't want to at first, because he did not want to dress up like a girl, but Loki convinced him that it would be a good plan to get his hammer back and Loki agreed to go with him dressed as his servant girl.  So off they went off together to the Land of the Giants.

When they arrived, Thrym was so overjoyed to see his future bride that he set out a feast of food and drink to celebrate. Thor ate like a man! He ate a whole ox, eight salmon, and all of the baked goods, and he drank three measures of mead, which was more than any man could eat or drink.

Thrym questioned his bride. He couldn't believe how much she ate and drank!

Loki (dressed as a servant girl) spoke for Thor, explaining that his bride was so excited about marrying him that she couldn't eat for a week.

Thrym tried to lift Thor's veil to steal a kiss, but he was thrown to the back of the room by her horrifying red eyes. He questioned his bride why her eyes were so red.

Again, Loki spoke up for Thor and explained to the giant that his bride was so excited about marrying him that she had not been able to sleep for a week.

Happy to hear this, Thrym ordered his servants to bring him Thor's mjolnir and place it on Freyja's lap, so that they could get on to the wedding ceremony.

Thor smiled when he saw his mjolnir hammer on his lap. He took off the bridal clothes, took the mighty mjolnir in his hands, and struck down Thrym and his kin.

.

Although Thor is known for causing the thunder and lightning in the sky, he is the son of Mother Earth and it is the rain he brings that helps the farmer. Therefore, the element of Thursday is Earth. It is the only day of the week with the element of Earth.

Thursday is considered a good day for farming and gardening and for celebrating the bounty of the earth. Because Thor fought against evil, it is also considered a good day for justice and legal matters.

The color of Thursday is green. Green is the color of nature, fertility, and life. Green also symbolizes money, and it is considered the color of healing because of it's cool, calming affect. The Egyptians wore green eyeliner, because they felt that it was a healing color for the eyes.Green eyeshadow is still used. Raw green foods are eaten for good health.

Green is loved by people who are well-balanced.  Add some green to your life when you want a new state of balance, when you feel a need for change or growth, when you want freedom to pursue new ideas, and when you want protection from fears and anxieties connected with the demands of others.
